About this plant

The tough, spiny windowsill shrub that blooms nearly all year. Crown of thorns (Euphorbia milii) has glossy green leaves and clusters of small, bright bracts that last for weeks. Choose soft butter-yellow or clean white. It is a succulent from Madagascar, so it handles dry air and a missed watering far better than a thirsty tropical.

Why you'll like it

If you have a sunny window and a habit of forgetting to water, this is your plant. It stays compact, it flowers on and off through the year, and it is hard to kill with neglect. The bracts hold their color for a long time, so a single plant keeps a bright corner looking cheerful.

What you get

A live crown of thorns in a 4" grower's nursery pot, in the color you choose. Flowering varies by plant and season, so your plant may arrive with a few blooms, in bud or between flushes.

. Use a gritty, fast-draining mix and water less in winter. It prefers to stay on the dry side.

How do I propagate a crown of thorns?
Take a 3 to 4 inch stem cutting in spring or summer and wear gloves, because the milky sap can irritate skin. Let the cut end dry for a few days until it calluses, then set it in a dry cactus mix. Water lightly once roots form.

How do I prune a crown of thorns?
Prune in spring to shape the plant or cut back leggy stems. Wear gloves, rinse sap off skin and tools with warm water, and cut just above a leaf node.

Does a crown of thorns come back every year?
Yes. It is a long-lived perennial shrub. It may drop some leaves in winter or when stressed, then regrow once it gets bright light and warmth again.
