About this plant

Calathea ornata, also called the pinstripe plant, has dark green leaves with thin pink stripes and a deep purple underside. You get one plant in a 6 inch nursery pot.

A fair warning: calatheas are moderately demanding. They like steady moisture and humid air, and dry rooms or hard tap water can crisp the leaf edges.

  • Light: medium to bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun.
  • Water: keep the soil lightly moist, never soggy. Distilled or rain water helps.
  • Humidity: high.
  • Temperature: keep it above 65F.
  • Placement: away from cold drafts and heating vents.

Common questions

Why are my Calathea ornata leaves curling?
Curling usually means the soil is too dry or the air is too dry. Check the soil, water with filtered or rain water, and keep humidity up.

Why do Calathea ornata leaf edges turn brown?
Hard tap water, low humidity and direct sun are the usual causes. Switch to distilled or rain water and move it out of direct light.

Does Calathea ornata fold its leaves at night?
Yes. Like other prayer plants, the leaves fold up in the evening and open again in the morning.
