About This Botanical

Botanical name: Haworthia 'Savanna' (succulent)

A compact succulent with firm, patterned leaves. It is tough and forgiving, and suits a bright windowsill.

How to care for haworthia

  • Light: an east or west window, or bright indirect light. A few hours of direct morning or evening sun is fine. Full midday summer sun can scorch the leaves.
  • Water: water only when the soil is dry. Check a couple of inches down with a finger. Root rot from wet roots is the most common cause of death.
  • Soil: a commercial potting mix with an equal part of perlite or coarse sand for drainage.
  • Temperature: ideally 75 to 90°F. Keep above the low 40s°F.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my haworthia turning brown? The most common cause is root rot from soil that stays wet. Check the roots and cut back watering. Sunburn from full midday sun also browns leaves.

How do I care for a haworthia? Give it an east or west window, water only when the soil is dry, and use a fast-draining mix.
