About This Botanical

Grow a bird of paradise from seed. Choose Strelitzia reginae, the compact orange bird of paradise, or Strelitzia nicolai, the white bird of paradise that grows into a tall, tree-like plant with broad leaves.

What's included

•  1 packet of 20 Strelitzia seeds (Reginae or Nicolai)
•  1 greenhouse planter
•  1 coconut fiber soil pod
•  1 care guide

What to expect: this is a patient grower's plant. Seeds take 2 to 3 months to sprout, you'll have a leafy young plant in about a year, and flowers come only on mature plants, often 3 or more years later.

Seeds are packed for the 2026 growing season.

Common questions

How do you grow bird of paradise from seed?
Pull the orange tuft off each seed, and lightly nick the hard coat if you like. Soak the seeds in warm water for 1 to 2 days. Plant about 1 inch deep in the moist soil pod, keep the lid on, and hold the planter at 75 to 85°F in bright, indirect light. Steady warmth matters more than anything else.

How do you care for a young bird of paradise?
Bright light, warmth and evenly moist soil while it is young. Pot it on into a container with drainage as the roots fill the pod. Water when the top inch of soil is dry.
